Your help is needed in a nationwide effort to make it safer for more children to walk and bicycle to school!

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national program that is aimed at increasing the number of children walking and bicycling to school, while also improving the safety of these activities. Law enforcement agencies can play a very important role in this program, working with engineers, teachers, health advocates and parents to improve student safety and encourage more physical activity.

Funding through grants may be available to support law enforcement involvement in SRTS programs. Because funds are administered by each State, the grant process varies. The purpose of this website is to give you more information about the program so that you can support local SRTS programs in your community.

Your involvement in SRTS in your community could mean you will:

  • save a child from being involved in a motor vehicle crash
  • have an opportunity for special training
  • help your agency bring in special federal funding for these initiatives
  • help your agency shine in the eyes of the community
